My name is Layla Abaza and I am the Head of English Department from PS to terminale. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to another school year at the Lycee Francais International de L’A.F.L.E.C. This is my eighth year at LFI and am sure that this year will be another great one.
I believe that children learn better when they feel : comfortable in their environment, confident in their ability and motivated to excel. This year the English team and I will use our experience to support and challenge the children to maximise their learning.
As part of the changes and continuous improvement plan we have in place, we have decided to change the names of the groups in order to avoid labelling students. Thus, from CP to CM2, we no longer have a beginner, intermediate, and advanced group. Instead, the students are going to be colour coded. This initiative came after much thought and reflection. We as teachers are grouping students according to skills they have acquired so far and ones they need to acquire by grade level. By doing so, we are sending a message across that no student is better than another. We have a set of skills that we need to acquire by grade and the students are grouped according to the skills they have acquired and the ones they need to by the end of the year.
In a world where bullying is increasing, we need to promote tolerance and social skills to help build a better place for our children. This should start at school and thus the decision to remove labels.
